Set in the 16th century AD, this film brings to life the tale of the doomed love affair between the Mughal Crown Prince Salim and the beautiful, ill-fated court dancer Anarkali, whose fervor and intensity perpetrates a war between the prince and his father, the great Mughal Emperor Akbar, and threatens to bring an empire to its knees.

Pakeezah (1972)

This film tells the story of Nargis, a girl brought up in a brothel. Unable to break away from the vicious circle, Nargis grows up and becomes a beautiful and popular dancer/singer Sahibjan. Aristocratic Salim Ahmed Khan is enthralled by her beauty and innocence, and eventually convinces her to elope with him. But trials await Sahibjan as she is recognized by men wherever she goes in the company of Salim. She refuses to be legally married to Salim and returns to the brothel. Salim eventually decides to marry someone else, and invites Sahibjan to dance at his wedding. She agrees to this, not knowing how many secrets will be revealed at this wedding.

Shatranj ke Khilari cover
Shatranj ke Khilari (1977)

Directed by Satyajit Ray and based on Munshi Premchand's short story of the same name, this film tells the story of two eccentric noblemen during the reign of the last king of Oudh. These two indulge in chess, day and night, without any regard to their personal lives or the eminent threat of the British taking over their region. Even when they are forced to leave their comfortable homes, they continue to play chess outdoors, with two loaded pistols, ready to oppose the British, or even each other, if need be.

Umrao Jaan (1981)

Abducted and sold into abrothel as a girl, Amiran grows up as Umrao Jaan. and becomes an accomplished poetess as well as an extraordinary dancer. She has many patrons, chief amongst them are Nawab Sultan and his father. The young Nawab is smitten by Umrao's beauty and her poems, but is forced to marry a girl of his mother's choice, leaving behind a heart-broken and devastated Umrao. She seeks solace in the arms of Faiz Ali and elopes with him, only to find out that he is a wanted bandit. After Faiz Ali is killed, Umrao relocates to Lucknow and establishes herself as a poet and dancer, but is hunted down by brothel-keepers. Umrao escapes again and attempts find her way back to her parents.
